History and Mission

History and Mission

The Virginia Law Foundation, established in 1974, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Both the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association nominate members of the Board. The Virginia Law Foundation provides financial support to projects that promote the rule of law, improved access to justice and law-related education throughout Virginia. Through 2008, the Foundation has awarded nearly $23 million in grants to hundreds of projects and initiatives benefitting thousands of Virginians.

The Virginia Law Foundation served as administrator of Virginia's Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts program from 1983-1995. Since1995, the Virginia Law Foundation?s grant program has been sustained solely from investment income and annual donations received. The Foundation spends approximately 5% of its assets annually for grants and operations.

As a result of concentrated strategic planning efforts begun in 2007, the Virginia Law Foundation adopted the following mission statement:

The Virginia Law Foundation promotes through philanthropy
the rule of law, access to justice and law-related education.

This mission was augmented in 2008 by the adoption of a Vision Statement to guide the Foundation?s grant-making, and provide a clearer direction to potential applicants about the kinds of proposals we would like to see in our grant program. Future grant making will be evaluated and monitored in light of the Vision Statement.

The Virginia Law Foundation strives to be recognized as the leading law-related philanthropic organization in Virginia, and respected as an innovator in the field.
